Farm Life in Kansas


 


Underhill Farms, a working deer and elk farm in Moundridge, Kansas, welcomes students around the world to enjoy Midwest hospitality, good food, comfortable surroundings and a truly unique farm experience. Students can live, work and eat on a real farm.

This year-round educational tour, Farm Life in Kansas, combines a variety of fun activities in a farming community with learning first-hand how American farmers raise plants and animals for human consumption. Students will be exposed to a variety of cultures – rural, Amish, Mennonite, German and more – while learning the history of farming and examining the issues modern farmers face.

The staff at Underhill Farms will work with each group to customize an itinerary to fit any budget and timeframe. Here’s a sampling of what’s possible:

  • Dairy farm – milk cows, bottle-feed calves, taste fresh milk
  • Help with farm chores, such as moving hay, sorting animals, cleaning stalls, making homemade ice cream
  • Fish at the Underhill Farms pond
  • Sheep farm – bottle-feed baby lambs, wash sheep, see sheep get clipped 
  • Learn the history of deer, elk and buffalo farms and feed the animals
  • Chicken farm – tour an egg laying facility
  • Visit a manufacturing plant where lawn mowers and other equipment is made
  • Drive farm equipment, such as tractors, combines and mowers
  • Pig farm – observe the daily operations
  • Enjoy a hayride, build and light a campfire, cook and eat dinner in the pasture
  • Feed mill – see how animal feed is made, stored and transported
  • Enjoy the flora and fauna during hikes on Underhill Farms’ 50 acres of woods
  • Visit a rural high school with fewer than 100 students for a cultural exchange
  • Sample venison and get cooking lessons using farm fresh products


There are a wide variety of other attractions in the area, including the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center (home to Apollo 13), Maxwell Wildlife Refuge and numerous museums and historic sites. Visits can be incorporated into a tour.
 

Let Underhill Farms handle the details
Underhill Farms offers a full-service tour. Once your group lands at Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita, Kan., the staff at Underhill Farms handles all logistics, including transportation, lodging and meals.
Transportation:  Underhill Farms will pick up your group at Mid-Continent Airport and transport you to the Bed & Breakfast. Underhill Farms will also provide transportation to activities. All farming activities are within 20 miles of Underhill Farms, so transportation time will be minimal. Return transportation to the airport is also provided.
Lodging:  Besides being a deer and elk farm, Underhill Farms is a member of the Kansas Bed and Breakfast Association. There are three bedrooms available for chaperones and space for as many as 14 students to sleep dormitory style in several large rooms. Sleeping bags are provided, as well as all home-cooked meals.
Tour length and timeframe
A four-day tour is the minimum length to truly experience Farm Life in Kansas. A seven-day stay is recommended, but tours can be customized to meet any length of stay. Farming is a year-round occupation, therefore tours can be scheduled at any time.
